The Rider Kicks Figure series is latest in a long line of budget gimmick figures. This year’s line ‘kicks’ off with the titular character, Kamen Rider Zi-O, and the series’ secondary hero, Kamen Rider Geiz.

Kamen Rider Zi-O

His dreams begin to become prophecy according to the arrival of Tsukuyomi and Woz, travellers from 50 years into the future, who tell him that 50 years from now he is the tyrannical leader of time, Oma Zi-O.

Power Rangers Lightning Collection Announced

During a panel at Power Morphicon today, the world was finally given a sneak peek at what Hasbro intends to do with the Power Rangers brand. This news brought hope to a great many fans, myself included, in the form of the Lightning Collection, a new anthology series of figures set to drop its first wave in spring 2019. Hasbro was very open with information about these new figures, and in a preview video, showed the production of a prototype Mighty Morphin’ White ranger figure. The features are as follows:

  • 27 points of articulation
  • True-to-life colours and proportions
  • Photo-realistic swappable actor faces
  • Weapons and accessories included
  • Optional Special Effects included

The figures were confirmed to retail for a price point of $19.99 in the US and will be released as an Anthology series, rather than dividing sets by individual team. Hasbro representatives were adamant that all eras of Rangers will be included, rolled out over time similar to the Marvel Legendary Collection series, also made by Hasbro. In addition, during a Q&A at the end of the panel, the question of Monster figures in this series was brought up, and an implicit yes was given but nothing has been confirmed there just yet.

Stay tuned for more details as they become available, including pre-order information.

Are you excited to see the Lightning Collection in person? Which ranger are you most looking forward to seeing realised this way? Leave a comment and let’s discuss!

Personal note: Huge thanks and kudos to @TokuChris for streaming the panel. We love you!

SODO Sundays – March 11th, 2018

Hello, tokusatsu community! Joshua Perry here to talk about SODO figures on my fortnighly series, SODO Sundays. This time we have some news from the Kamen Rider Build along with special news for Kamen Rider Ex-Aid.

Kamen Rider Build

Last time on SODO Sundays the full lineup for Build’s Set 7 was revealed. Instead of moving on to the first figure of Set 8 it has been revealed what the first figure of Set 9 is, RoseCopter! RoseCopter comes with a special helicopter propeller piece that can go on his back, similar to the Taka Wings from HawkGatling. The propeller can also be held as a weapon and used to replicate flying away scenes.

Also included with this form is the Blue Hokuto Pandora Panel. The Green Touto one was previously released with OctopusLight back in Set 4. It’s unknown when and if the Red Seito Panel will be released with a figure.

6.jpg

Coming from the Build Hyper Battle DVD is the KumaTV form! This form will be similar to Ex-Aid’s Bike Gamer from last year as this SODO figure will be packed in with a future issue of TV-Kun in mid March.

Kamen Rider Ex-Aid

Revealed a little while ago was the fact that the SODO line was going to do the Kamen Rider Genm God Maximum Gamer Lv Billion figure. Now we have release details for it. It will be part of the Kamen Rider Build SODO Set 8 with Kamen Rider Ex-Aid set in April. This figure is basically a repaint of the Ex-Aid Maximum Gamer that came out last year. This one comes with a Gashacon Keyslasher.

No release info for the Kamen Rider Lazer Lv X, but it will be coming.

As always you can watch SODO Sundays Episode 14 here:

That’s it for this edition of SODO Sundays! The next edition will release on March 25th on both Toku Toy Store News and YouTube channel. For constant updates on the SODO/SHODO line, go check out the @SODOFountain Twitter page.

Toku Toy Store at London Toy Fair 2018

Toku Toy Store visited Toy Fair and London Olympia this week to give you the rundown on all of the newest tokusatsu toys and collectables available to retailers in 2018. As you’d expect, the only real toku on offer was Power Rangers but we were able to take a look at the next wave of Legacy items as well items not previously announced for the Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel toyline.

Funko

Unlike previous years, Funko granted access to all retailers without the need for an appointment. Their space was lined with a display of of Funko Pops past and present with Power Rangers well represented. Deeper into the space, the next wave of Hero World figures were hidden away on the bottom shelf. Funko were unable to confirm a UK release date or whether the line would be exclusive to any particular retailer but said that they are coming.

Mash’ems: Twist’em & Squish’em

Also on display were Power Rangers Ninja Steel Mash’ems. Mash’ems describe their product as “a highly collectable toy that all kids will love. Mash’em allows kids to play with their favorite characters in a whole different way. They will be able to Mash’em, Twist’em, squish’em, and Stretch’em.” Mash’ems have been made for previous Neo-Saban era seasons but these haven’t made it over to the UK. The distributor would not state whether any of the major retailers had picked up this toyline.

Legacy

Up the stairs at Bandai UK’s stall, there were lots of Legacy treats to be found. Many of the next wave of Legacy figures that have recently seen a US release were on display. Legacy Zeo and Dino Thunder are expected February with an RRP of £24.99. Early prototypes of the Legacy Psycho Rangers were available to view but, unfortunately, work continues on this product as they are unable to stand up at present (Bandai had them laying down on the shelf!) Auto-morphin figures were also available to look at and are expected February with an RRP of £24.99 each.

The large size non-combining Legacy Zords were on display. The Tyrannosaurus Dinozord truly is a feast to behold. This line has got a lot of flack for it’s lack of ability to form the Megazord but in my opinion it is well worth the £29.99 RRP price. In addition to Tyrannosaurus, Saber Tooth-Tiger and Mastadon were available to view. This is the first time Mastodon has seen the light of day worldwide.

The Legacy Zeonizer and Golden Power Staff were on display. While we’ve seen these before, we now have a price for UK release: £99.99 for the Zeonizer and £149.99 for the Golden Power Staff. Both items are expected to release in March. On the shelf above these items was the full cosplay-sized Green Ranger helmet as well as the smaller display-sized White Ranger helmet. Display helmets are expected to start hitting stores this month while the Green Ranger helmet is expected in March, alongside the Zeo items.

Bandai were very strict about photography and would not allow us to take any pictures. There were some sneaky photos taken by other attendees though, so we’ve included them here for your viewing (Credit to @SimplePeteDoodles).

Super Ninja Steel

Last year, Toy Fair saw the debut of the Lion Fortress Zord and while there was nothing quite of that magnitude on display, we were treated to some non-before seen items in the Super Ninja Steel toyline. This year, Toy Fair saw the worldwide debut of many fantastic items.

The two main surprises were the Super Steel Blaster, a bright red cannon style weapon based on the Lion Fire Zord. The blaster features sounds and is capable of shooting darts up to a distance of 60 feet. The RRP for this item is £44.99 and, like the majority of the Super Ninja Steel toys, will release in July. Next up, was the Simian Sniper Guard, a motion activated dart launcher modeled on a gorilla. There was a mock-up box standing next to the toy, confirming its functionality but the distance you can shoot darts was labelled TBC. The RRP of this item is a rather pricey £49.99; we’ll need to see more of this toy in action to know whether it’s able to justify the price tag.

The Superstar Blade, Ninja Steel’s answer to Ninninger’s Gekiatsutou Ichibantou was on display. Like it’s Japanese predecessor, the toy looked identical to the standard Ninja Star Blade repainted in the blue and burgundy colour scheme. The toy will RRP at £29.99 on release. Already seen on shelves in the USA, the Lion Fire Morpher and Blaze Megazord were available to view. The Lion Fire Morpher features a twin dart launcher; Bandai are really digging launchable darts in this toyline, it appears. The Lion Fire Morpher will retail at £34.99 and the Blaze Megazord at £42.99, both scheduled for July release.

Finally, alongside the standard Ninja Stars we’re used to from Ninja Steel were two new and different types of shuriken. There were some solid plastic stars laying down on the shelf (too solid to make it to retail, I believe) and other rubber based stars with suction cups around the outside. These Special Ops Ninja Stars, like everything else, are available in July and will retail at £7.99 a pack.

That’s it for Toy Fair in 2018; what toys are you most looking forward to? Comment below and let us know your thoughts or join the conversation on our Facebook and Twitter pages!

SODO Sundays: October 8th, 2017

Hello, tokusatsu community! Joshua Perry here to talk about SODO figures on my biweekly series, SODO Sundays. This week we have news from Kamen Rider Build, Kamen Rider Ex-Aid, and the Ultraman franchise.

Kamen Rider Build

Last week, Bandai revealed the lineup for SODO Set 2, due out at the end of October. The final figures revealed for this set were two more Best Matches for Build. His newest form NinninComic was shown off first; this figure comes with the Ninja half, the Comic half, a stand, and his weapon the 4 Koma Ninpoutou.

Bandai also revealed Build’s next Best Match: RocketPanda! This figure comes with the Rocket half, the Panda half, and a stand. RocketPanda also comes with the Steam Blade weapon for Night Rogue and Blood Stalk. To give both of them the blade, you’ll have to buy two of RocketPanda, sadly.

Of course, as with all SODO Build figures, the Ninja, Comic, Rocket, and Panda halves can be mixed and matched with all the other halves already released to get all of Build’s Trial Forms.

The full line up for SODO Build Set 2:

1-2: HawkGatling

3-4: NinninComic

5-6: RocketPanda

7: Night Rogue

8

When it comes to Blood Stalk, his figure was just revealed last night as the first figure in Set 3, due out in November. Stalk comes with the sticker for his stand (stand sold in other sets) and the Transteam Gun. The gun is cast in red plastic this time, probably to cut down on costs a bit.

A final note for Set 3 is that Bandai said to make sure you have the Vacuum and Hedgehog pieces for this set, basically confirming that Fire Truck and Lion will be released in Set 3 to complete those Best Matches.

Kamen Rider Ex-Aid

A few weeks ago, it was announced that Ex-Aid’s new form, featured in the upcoming Kamen Rider Para-DX Hyper Battle DVD, was getting a SODO figure release in the Kamen Rider Ex-Aid Super Complete Special Edition Hyper Muteki Box in December. Pictures for this figure have finally been revealed. The figure looks great, using all repainted parts from other Ex-Aid SODO figures it captures the look of Double Fighter Gamer Level 39 perfectly.

7

Ultraman

Finally, two new SHODO Ultraman VS. sets have had some pictures revealed. VS. Set 4 features the figures of the original Ultraman, Ultraman Tiga, Red King, and Alien Balton. This set releases in December.

In January 2018, the next Ultraman VS. set will be released. VS. Set 5 will include the current Ultraman, Ultraman Geed, as well as Ultraman Leo, Astra, and Magma Star. Set 5 also includes some effect parts of buildings and attacks to create great display pieces. The building pieces would also be great for the Super Sentai Minipla robo series.

Of course, SODO Build Set 2-3 as well as Ultraman VS. Sets 4-5 will be available at TokuToyStore.com!

You can watch my full SODO Sunday video below:
