New Power Ranger revealed in BOOM! Studios’ newest offering

BOOM! Studios brings fans another new Power Ranger in their newest outing for fan favourite Tommy Oliver in Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon!

The latest graphic novel to be released by BOOM! Studios will see an adult Tommy Oliver go out on a quest to find his missing son, JJ Oliver, a cadet within the ranks of S.P.D. In Tommy’s quest to find his missing son, a new Power Ranger will be created. The graphic novel is written by veteran Kyle Higgins and will be a nice surprise for fans. Spoiler warnings for what is ahead.

Here is a look at the description for the storyline in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon:

As a young adult, Tommy Oliver set upon a journey that would inspire hundreds of Power Rangers that would come afterwards, thwarting evils like Empress Rita Repulsa, Lord Zedd, and King Mondo of the Machine Empire. Now, Tommy’s retired with Katherine and leaves protecting the world to Space Patrol Delta–including his son, JJ. But when Jake disappears, presumed dead after an undercover mission goes wrong, Tommy will call on all his training, his friends, and maybe even some of his enemies as he sets out on one last mission: find his son and bring him home. From writer Kyle Higgins (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Nightwing) comes the final story for history’s mightiest Power Ranger.

In the series, we will be starting with JJ Oliver as a cadet in the ranks of S.P.D but at the end of issue one, he replaces Bridge Carson as the S.P.D Green Ranger when Bridge gets promoted to Red Ranger (see Once A Ranger….). In a rather surprising twist however, JJ finishes the story arc by morphing into action as the S.P.D. Green Ranger – but not quite the same suit. The final panel of the book sees the S.P.D. Green Ranger with the Mighty Morphin Green Ranger’s iconic Dragon Shield.

With the creation of this new S.P.D Green Ranger, Tommy, 25 year legacy is finally complete with him finally passing the Dragon Soul onto his son. For fans, this will be the first time the Dragon Shield can be seen on any Power Ranger suit outside Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. This also continues the mythology for Power Rangers S.P.D. taking the team to new heights. Commander Cruger now runs S.P.D. after Commander Birdie’s retirement, Sky Tate has filled Cruger’s spot as base commander and filling the void as Red Ranger is Bridge Carson, with JJ Oliver now taking over as Green Ranger. It is assumed that Syd Drew and Z Delgado remain as the team’s Pink and Yellow Rangers respectively. The only unknown Ranger on the team now is S.P.D Blue.

What do you think of the fact Tommy has finally passed on the Dragon Shield? Do you think this really is Tommy’s last outing as a Power Ranger? Let us know on our social media pages!

Kamen Rider Zi-O Episode 1 Review

It’s been built up for months, with previews, item showcases, and clips shown during the run of Build, but now here we are at last: Kamen Rider Zi-O has begun! This show starts off with frantic action right out of the gate, wasting no time in establishing the existential threat that is Demon King Zi-O. The opening scene prompts a Terminator-style time travel plot to destroy the Demon King before he can gain his full power, and this becomes the setup for the entire series.

Demon King Zi-O stands before a statue that reads: To Commemorate the First Transformation of Tokiwa Sougo

For those unfamiliar, or a bit confused by the opening episode, Kamen Rider Zi-O centers on Tokiwa Sougo, a high school student in our modern time, and the future Demon King of the entire world. By his own admission, Sougo’s life’s dream is to become a king, and he frequently declares as much to his classmates, his uncle, and whoever else will listen. Unbeknownst to him, the fateful date of 1st September 2018 (the air date of the premiere and setting of episode one) is the beginning of his dream becoming a reality.

Sougo seems like a good person, albeit a bit awkward with others because of his dedication to his goal. It will be interesting to see hints of his future personality come out as the show continues, but as of this episode, there is seemingly no trace of the kind of man who could do the things Demon King Zi-O is shown doing in Sougo. Tsukuyomi, a girl from the Demon King’s future 50 years ahead, believes Sougo’s course through life can be corrected and means to change the future peacefully. Geiz, on the other hand, doesn’t share that philosophy, and is very much the Terminator to Sougo’s John Connor. Each futurian uses their own Time Majin for time travel, and seemingly dimensional travel as one of their stops deposits them in Build’s world, around the time of episode 12 of Build, going by the date used.

Between the time travel, the spectacular fights and world-building, and even the gimmicks and armours the characters use, episode one of Kamen Rider Zi-O does a lot of things right, and sets the bar very high for what is to come. Even our first Another Rider, Another Build, is given ample attention, using a combination of Build’s powers and the human host’s natural inclination to basketball. Every reference used has some purpose in the larger plot, rather than being a reference for the sake of nostalgia, right down to Tsukuyomi’s gun being a modified version of the Faiz Phone, now called Faiz Phone X, and making the same visual and sound effects on a hit that Faiz himself did with the weapon. This show has the potential to be a masterpiece or a disaster, but if this first entry is anything to go by, we are in for a treat over the next year.

What did you think of Kamen Rider Zi-O’s premiere? Are you excited for what is to come? Do you have any theories about how the series will play out? Let’s start a discussion below or on social media!

Ultraman R/B Episode 1 Preview

Ahead of its impending release date, a new preview has been released for the premier episode of Ultraman R/B. The clip sets up the opening of the series, in which a kaiju attacks Akaya City, home of brothers Katsumi and Isami Minato, who will become Ultraman Rosso and Ultraman Blu in order to protect their home and their family. The brothers have a strong tag team dynamic in the action scenes that have been shown thus far, and this trend is likely to continue as the series progresses and they begin to take on bigger and badder opponents, such as series villain Ultraman Orb Dark.

Ultraman R/B has been previously confirmed to contain elements outside of the common Ultraman tropes and plot beats, with actors and producers commenting that these changes will be done in a way that is seen as a positive for the series and the franchise, as a whole. The cast and crew are enthusiastic as they wholeheartedly throw all of their talent and dedication into the production of the series, which will run for 25 episodes beginning on July 7th, 2018 in Japan. As in the past, Crunchyroll will likely pick up global distribution of the series, though this has yet to be confirmed.

Please support the official release by watching Ultraman R/B on officially-licensed streaming sites or buying the Blu-Ray set when it releases. To get in the mood, you can pre-order the Ultraman R/B Rube Gyro device from Toku Toy Store, here!

Ultraman R/B New PV Released

As we draw closer to the premiere of Ultraman R/B on July 7th, Tsuburaya Productions has released a new PV for the series, highlighting characters, transformations, and some of the mechanics of how the series’ gimmick items will work. In the feature, we get our first proper look at the brothers in action, both in human and Ultraman forms, and we finally see how the R/B Gyro will be used.

The crystals used in the R/B Gyro, as it turns out, are discs, or chips. When activated by one brother or the other, the chip gains either one or two horns, depending on which activates the chip. Once inserted into the R/B Gyro device, the person transforming calls out the element of the chip, and uses a crank-like function in the R/B Gyro to push and pull three times, finally transforming.

This seems to be a constant, no matter which of the brothers is using which element, as we see them swap elements (fire and water) in the PV, which is just over three-and-a-half minutes in length. The fire crystal, when used by Ultraman Rosso, has two horns like a bull. When used by Ultraman Blu, it has one horn, like a unicorn. The same is true in both cases of the water crystal. The brothers swap colour pallettes after their form changes, as shown below.

Ultraman Rosso Aqua and Ultraman Blu Flame

Though we are never given a full view of him, we do catch a glimpse in this video of Ultraman Orb Dark, as well, using his own Gyro to generate black energy, for his element of Darkness. The video, linked below, highlights a Kaiju battle, and shows that like Ultraman Belial before him, Ultraman Orb Dark can directly manipulate and create new Kaiju. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out when Ultraman R/B premieres one month from today, July 7th, in Japan and shortly after, for the rest of the world.

Kamen Rider Zi-O Revealed

In a surprising leak, Kamen Rider Zi-O (Zeo? Geo?) has been revealed for 2018-2019. The name appears to come from a credible source, pictured below, and thus begins the rumours and leaks for another year. It seems it was right around this time last year, during the initial run of Kamen Rider Ex-Aid, that we got the first rumours and the leaked name of Kamen Rider Build. If true, this would line up with the earlier rumoured leak of the world- traveling hero, Kamen Rider Geo.

So far, no information has been revealed about the plot, cast, production team, or gimmick items, but stay tuned for more details and speculation as we ramp up to the premiere of Kamen Rider Zi-O following the conclusion of Build later this summer.

What do you think this rider’s theme will be? Let us know!

New Images Show Potential New Kamen Rider

Do these new images show off a new Rider, or is it just a well-made prank?

Since it’s April Fools Day scans and rumours have been popping up recently, 99% of these are almost certainly fake. However, these images have really stood out among the rest and probably has the highest chances of actually being real. Supposedly, this is concept art from the new season of Kamen Rider to be aired late this year. While it is still best to take these images with a grain of salt, they’re still really well made and worth talking about.

The first image shows a nameless new Rider with a handful of its forms, one of them being a base form and the others being combinations of three previous riders suggesting that this is an anniversary season. Similar to OOO, the three riders that make up the form are all set to a certain body part, either the head, torso or legs. The first of these new forms is a mix of Stronger, Kabuto & Blade, the second being a mix of Shin, Gills & Amazon, and the last one being a mix of Mach, Accel & Lazer. What’s interesting is that the riders that make up the forms all have a common motif. The riders that make up the first form are all based on the Japanese Rhinoceros Beetle, the Riders that make up the second form are all mutant-type Riders, the Riders that make up the last form are all Secondary Riders based on motorbikes. This means that other forms will likely also consist of riders with a common theme. With this in mind, it’s going to be fun to speculate what new forms could be made out of what riders. Personally, I would like to see a form made up of Riders that started off evil and eventually redeemed themselves (Zangetsu, Genm & Chaser), all female Riders (Poppy, Marika & Necrom P) and Riders that are controlled by two people (W, Den-O & Drive).

Above the Forms is Eyecon like devices that are supposedly this season’s gimmick, three of the devices represent the new Rider’s base forms while the other eighteen represent the other Riders. Unlike the OOO medals, the devices don’t seem to have any indication of what body part they are used on, possibly meaning that they could be used in any order. Along with the previously mentioned forms, there are also forms representing Knight, Baron & Brave (Knight themed Secondary Riders), Beast, Kaixa & Ixa (All Secondary Riders) and G3, Drake & DiEnd. Because the Secondary Rider forms seem to be connected to the main rider, it could suggest that this season will only have 1 rider.

The next image shows two other forms or possibly two other new riders, the first of which is next to a silhouette of what appears to be an upgraded version of the form. The other seems to be a form based on Kamen Rider Decade, if these are new riders than this could actually be a new form of Decade. Since the devices in the first page seem to be connected to one of the three forms, some of the Past Rider forms could be exclusive to one of the other Riders/Forms. If these were new riders, then the movie exclusive rider would likely use forms based on other movie exclusives (Bujin Gaim,
Dark Drive & Dark Ghost, Idunn, Mars & Kamuro or New Den-O, Nega Den-O & G Den-O).

The final image shows brand new forms for different riders, supporting the idea that the Decade themed rider might be Decade himself. The new rider forms are Kamen Rider Cyclone, A new OOO combo with an insect theme, Fourze Launcher States and Zangetsu Jinba Melon Arms. Since this is likely an anniversary season, Riders from Wizard and Drive-Build would also likely get new forms. I would personally like to see Necrom get his own equivalent of the Mugen Damashii or a Super Dead-heat Mach.

So, Is it a fake? Because of the time of year, It probably is. The Background seems a bit plain for a catalogue and some pages have information missing (Price and/or release date etc.) and it’s also quite strange that some images don’t even show the full page. However, it’s art style is really similar to other art shown in real catalogues so I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up being real. We’ll probably have to wait until the summer to get proper confirmation but this could be a look into what the final Heisei Rider Season could be like.

Do you think this is real? What forms would you like to see? Let us know in the comments!

Kaito Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger: Epsiode 1 Review

It’s that time of year again and it’s time to meet our new Sentai team, or teams I should say: Kaito Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger.

For this Sentai series, which is the 42nd series, Toei has decided to give us two new teams for the year ahead and the theme is pretty interesting as it is essentially cops vs robbers.

2018-02-13 (26).png

We begin in a casino and seeing a man lose all his money on roulette in a casino and he’s about to get taken away when we see three strangers break in through the window. After they get up, they reveal themselves to be the thieves that everyone has been talking about then the one dressed in red throws a card at the manager, revealing him to be a Gangler, part of a multi-dimensional crime syndicate.

2018-02-13 (3).png

The lady dressed in yellow then points out the safe in the Gangler’s belly which he reveals can only be opened by Ganglers before ordering his goons, Pondermen, to attack the three strangers. The trio respond by pulling out their mysterious-looking guns and fighting back against the Pondermen and the Gangler when the one in red presses a plane against the Gangler’s safe, opening it and removing a weird looking die from within, much to the Gangler’s surprise.

2018-02-13 (9).png

2018-02-13 (13).png

The die in question is then revealed, by the one in red, to be a piece of something called the Lupin Collection. After the lady in yellow says they are taking it back, the Gangler attacks, causing an explosion.

We then cut seeing a police car speeding out of its garage to an unknown location with three police officers inside. A lady in a pink jacket and two men, one in green and one in red.

2018-02-13 (14).png

After that, we go back to the Casino and find out that the mysterious trio have changed into their Sentai forms, Kaito Sentai Lupinranger. They then resume the fight against the Pondermen and the Gangler, swiftly defeating them and launching the Gangler across the room when the three officers from earlier burst in and try to arrest everyone, including the Lupinrangers, but they defeat the Gangler and escape while the officer in the red jacket curses them.

2018-02-13 (10).png

After the title screen, we are taken to a park where people are talking about the Lupinrangers when we meet Lupin Red, Yano Kairi, the thief in the red suit, and Patoren Ichigou, Asaka Keiichiro, who was the officer in the red jacket. They swap a small amount of dialogue then part ways when we meet Kogure, who is a butler helping the Lupinrangers collect the missing Lupin Collection from the Ganglers by supplying Kairi with information on targets.

2018-02-13 (16).png

We then go to a restaurant called Bistrot Jurer, which looks pretty busy, when we meet Lupin Yellow, Hayami Umika, the lady in the yellow dress who also works as a waitress at the restaurant. We also meet Lupin Blue, Yoimachi Touma, the male in the blue suit who is also a cook.

2018-02-13 (17).png

After Touma and Umaki exchange some dialogue, we arrive at a police station where we meet Patoren Sangou, Myoujin Tsukasa, the officer in the pink jacket, and Patoren Niigou, Hikawa Sakuya, the officer in the green jacket. We also meet their boss, Commissioner Hilltop, who gives them some yokan as a present. We also get to meet their robot assistant, Jim Carter.

2018-02-13 (18).png

Keiichiro walks in and Jim Carter explains that the Lupinrangers have been chasing down the missing pieces of the Lupin Collection for a while now.

We then return to Kairi and Kogure in a limo, where Kogure places the die from earlier into a book. When Kairi asks him about the Lupin Collection and Kogure warns him against asking too many questions before saying he’s grateful to Kairi and the Lupinrangers for their help.

After Kogure and Kairi finish talking, we arrive at a sinister looking mansion which is revealed to be the Gangler’s headquarters. We meet their boss, Dogranio Yabun, who’s 999th birthday is currently being celebrated. We also meet Goshu Ru Medu, who congratulates Yabun on his birthday, as well as Destora Mazzio, Yabun’s bodyguard. Yabun then reveals that he will make the Gangler that takes over the human world the new boss.

2018-02-13 (20).png

We then return to Kairi and Kogure, who hands Kairi an envelope containing their next target then drops him off at the restaurant from earlier. Kairi walks into the restaurant and declares that everyone needs to leave because of a group reservation which turns out to be their other job as Lupinrangers. We then see them suit up as Kairi explains the mission.

After that, we see them skillfully infiltrate the building where the Ganger is hiding. They eavesdrop on him but he knows they are there and destroys the vent. They then get into a fight with some Pondermen when we suddenly cut to the police station and Jim Carter suddenly shouting that he’s detected a Gangler attack.

2018-02-13 (22).png

As the Patorangers prepare to leave, Commissioner Hilltop arrives with some bulky cases, saying new equipment has arrived just in time to be tested.

We then go back to the Lupinrangers and their fight with the Pondermen when the Gangler catches Umika and Touma and tries to threaten Kairi. Kairi then blasts the roof which buries Umika, Touma and the Gangler. It’s then revealed that Umika and Touma had blasted through the floor before being crushed and we get to see the transformation sequence for the trio, becoming Kaito Sentai Lupinranger.

2018-02-13 (24).png

After that, we see the Lupinrangers take the fight outside when the Patorangers arrive and reveal that they now have VS Changers as well and transform into Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger which where the episode ends.

So what did you think of the new Sentai teams? Looking forward to seeing what happens in future episodes? Let us know in the comments below!
